Jeep’s ancestor, the Willys Jeep, was made to take soldiers wherever they needed through whatever terrain they faced. While Jeep continues in that direction with its offerings, a pretty cool feature is the ability to switch out your Jeep's top. As a proud owner of a Jeep, you might have seen some Jeeps cruising about with the top down.

What can you use on your Jeep, and what's the best option for you? We are on hand to advise you. It’s not just tops, though. You can find pretty much anything off-road related on our Morris 4x4 website. Today we’ll talk about some options you can use on your Jeep, from a hardtop, soft top, and a bikini top and which would fit for which model, a few recommendations, and usage scenarios.

Jeep Hardtops

One of the most common and practical tops you can have on your Jeep is the hardtop. These are usually made of solid fiberglass, have a bit of weight to them, and require a ton of space to store. On the other hand, hardtops are great for when the weather is not so sunny and provide better insulation. Of the three options we're exploring, hardtops come on top in terms of longevity due to the materials used to construct them. While Jeep hardtop removal and storing might be cumbersome, it does add more space for luggage, skis, and other equipment, plus adds protection to keep them safe from the elements. We definitely recommend hardtops when the weather is adverse and when storage space takes precedence.

Although priced on the higher end of the spectrum, the Mopar 3-piece Freedom Top for the Jeep JK models offers top-of-the-line protection and durability.

The DV8 off-road fastback 2-piece top makes your Jeep resemble a Humvee and gives it a badass look.

For a bit more sunshine, the Bestop Sunrider adds a sunroof option.

Other hardtop options include Xtreme Tops, Smittybilt, and Bestop, with all mentioned available with us.

Jeep Soft Tops

Soft tops on a Jeep offer an open-air feel. These tops are usually made of waterproof and flexible materials. Straight off the bat, the best part of owning a soft top is the ease with which you can put it on and off. They are almost like hardtops but offer far more versatility. So when should you use a soft top? These are ideal when you're traveling with some cargo at a leisurely pace. They offer protection from the elements as well as ease of installation or removal. However, they lack durability as they are made from softer, more flexible materials, so a hard top is better for the cold and rainy seasons.

Storage is not really a concern for a soft top. It is just a simple matter of removing, folding, and stowing it away. Take this Bestop Supertop with tinted rear windows for a dash of privacy, and it is perfect for the CJ7 and Wrangler YJ Jeeps.

If you're aiming for a military vibe, then this Rampage Trailview Tonneau soft top is exactly what you need if space is no concern for you.

An excellent option for the CJ5 and the Willys Jeep is the Bestop Tigertop which comes with full soft doors.

Other options include Rugged Ridge, Smittybilt, and Mopar to browse through.

Jeep Bikini Tops

In our opinion, the ultimate summertime top option is the bikini top for the Jeep. Bikini tops come in two styles, the traditional style, and the safari style.

The traditional is the perfect bikini top for a 2-door Jeep as they cover the top and leave the back open to the elements. We recommend something like the Bestop Traditional Bikini Top for the CJ7, CJ8 Scrambler, and the Wrangler YJ Jeep models.

Safari style covers the front as well as the back, thus affording more UV protection for you and the passengers. This Bestop Header Safari Bikini top kit is one of our more popular options. With zero drilling required for installation, this option is ideal for the Wrangler JK model.

The Bestop Header Safari style bikini top is more of a hybrid between the traditional and the safari bikini top, as the top covering extends to the Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited's passengers.

Bikini tops are excellent in the summer, but that's where we suggest you draw the line unless you want to paddle inside your Jeep while driving if it rains. The bikini top affords scant protection from rain and dust. So make sure to have this top removed and replaced by either a hardtop or a soft top before inclement weather hits.
